Yacht Races

For sailors who have completed basic training and want to gain experience: join the select yacht races in the bays of the Aegean with Sailplus.

Yacht Racing

The peak of teamwork

For sailors who have completed basic sailing training and want to develop their sailing and seamanship, one option to gain experience is to take part in yacht races. Yacht racing is thrilling because it is both a team game and one that must be played according to the rules of the wind and the sea.

Reading the language of the wind and the sea to trim the sails correctly, the crew's effort to perform every manoeuvre in sync, and learning to drive the boat knowing that the wind is always an extra crew member — all of this gives aspiring sailors a unique experience.

Sailors who want to make the most of these opportunities, take sailing training and gain racing experience can join the select races in the bays of the Aegean with Sailplus. The racing crew, who stay aboard throughout the race, receive training on task allocation and racing theory and enjoy taking part in race briefings and award ceremonies.

Q & A

Frequently asked about yacht racing

1. How can I join sail races with Sailplus?

You can register for a specific race through the phone numbers listed on our website, via our social media accounts, or by e-mail.

2. Is there a prerequisite to participate in sail racing with Sailplus?

To race with Sailplus you must have completed at least basic sailing training — with Sailplus or another sailing school — or have some racing experience. In addition, a "racing license" issued by the Turkish Sailing Federation (TYF) is mandatory for everyone taking part in races.

3. What is a racing license and how can I obtain it?

The racing license is a mandatory, TYF-approved document required of all athletes (including yacht racers) who take part in sailing races. Sailplus can also obtain a "temporary license" on your behalf, valid only for the specific race you are joining. If you want a racing license valid for a full calendar year and usable in multiple races, you must apply for it yourself, directly to the TYF or through a sailing club.

4. Can sailors with no prior racing experience join Sailplus?

Yes, sailors with no prior racing experience can race with Sailplus. Having completed basic training is enough. Training about the race and your assigned role on board is provided by Sailplus during the preparation and throughout the race.

5. How are racing roles and training organised?

Roles are assigned by the captain, taking into account the crew's seamanship knowledge and experience and the sail setup to be used. From bow to stern, the positions in yacht racing are: bowman, mast, pit, cockpit (trimmers and grinders), mainsail, navigation and helm.

6. What is the race program like?

Races are scheduled once the calendar announcements are made. After registration, depending on the organising club, the race begins with a briefing held the day before or early on the race day. Boats in the same class — or all classes together — start on the geographic and/or buoy courses set by the race committee. The race series ends with an awards ceremony held after each race or after all races are completed.

7. Is any special equipment or clothing needed for races?

Waterproof, breathable t-shirts, shorts, trousers, overalls and a jacket, together with light-soled boat shoes or trainers and racing gloves, are suitable. Bring spares appropriate for the season. As on all voyages, a hat, sunglasses (with a strap) and sunscreen are also required during races.

8. Is there an age restriction to participate in races?

There is no age limit to take part in yacht races, though participants should have the physical capability needed for racing tasks.

9. What are the racing fees and what is included?

Accommodation on the boat, a pre-race refresher training and practice are included in the price. Marina fees, transfer of the boat, fuel, water, electricity and unlimited tea/coffee on board are also included. Excluded: the amounts paid to the race organisation for the boat and crew (split among the racers) and the temporary license fee.
