Sailing a yacht is the joy of moving freely on the water powered by the wind. With the right technique, safety awareness and practice, it is a skill anyone can learn. Here is what you need to know to handle a sailboat effectively:

  • Reading Wind Direction: Every move on a sailboat is planned around the wind. Constantly track its angle.
  • Sail Trim: Adjusting the genoa and mainsail to the wind directly affects boat speed.
  • Balance and Position: Crew position is key to balancing heel — correct positioning, especially at the rail, increases safety.
  • Steering: Small, continuous corrections to hold a course beat late, hard rudder inputs every time.
  • Maneuver Awareness: Briefing the crew before a tack or gybe and executing steps in order prevents collisions.

In Sailplus training we cover these principles first in the handbook, then make them stick by practicing at the helm in real conditions.
